Artist Spotlight on Snipes (@snipes901)
“That which is from the heart touches the heart. I write what I experience and most people identify because of a similar situation in their own lives.” A quote from rising 26 year artist/producer/writer Snipes when asked about why his music stands out from the average artist. A native of Memphis, TN his musical journey started at the tender age of 8 when he began playing instruments in church. During his teens he began to sing and write poems as well. While attending Austin Peay State University, he performed in the school’s weekly open mic show called “Peay Soup.” It was there where the self-proclaimed “writer not rapper” developed a love for the stage.
In 2009 he along with members of his family formed the R&B/Soul group Touch Of Soul. They achieved moderate success in the mid-south region with their songs “Springtime” and “Friday Night” which Snipes helped write, produce, and sang on the 1st verse of both. It wasn’t until 2011 when he looked at hip hop as a viable option for himself. “I listened to the radio and didn’t hear anything that I could relate to”, recalls Snipes. “There’s nothing wrong with party music. There’s a time and place for everything. However, when there’s an unbalance in the music, there tends to be an unrealistic depiction of reality.” With that mindset Snipes began working on his upcoming release “My Point Of View.” The project features instrumentals you can feel and lyrics that make you think. “Ultimately I wan to positively impact people’s lives with my music” says the multi-talented father of 1. With a little time and work he will do just that.
